Chelsea are one of the clubs in the race to sign Athletic star Nico Williams this summer.
Two days ago, Sport reported the Blues are pushing hard to secure the winger’s services with a ‘dizzying’ proposal. It was also said Chelsea are willing to double the 21-year-old’s salary, but his preference is to join Barcelona.
Thursday’s edition of Sport have published an interview with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, who is currently with the Spain squad at the Euros.
After previewing La Roja’s quarter-final clash against Germany on Friday, the left-back was asked about Williams, who also operates on the left side [wing] of the pitch.
“He’s a great player, he’s bringing out his full potential, we’re proud that he’s in our team, that he’s our teammate and with players like that everything is easier,” he said.
The Catalan newspaper then asked the 25-year-old fullback whether the attacker is ready to join Barcelona. When responding to that, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man said he’s trying to convince his compatriot to join Chelsea.
“It would be a great signing, but it all depends on his opinion, I’m pushing him to sign for Chelsea…. In the end it all depends on him, he is very young, with a long way to go and I think he will be a great player,” Cucurella explained.
Sport also asked the defender to give his take on Marc Guiu, who left Barcelona for the west London club earlier this week. Cucurella said he has held talks with the 18-year-old striker.
“We talked and I told him if he needed anything to let me know,” he added.
