AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit has been linked to Newcastle United and several other clubs in recent months.
Last month, we covered claims from the Dutch press that Newcastle United, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund are all keen.
Soccer News now relay claims made elsewhere about Newcastle United and Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old midfielder made his way into the Eredivisie side’s first team in 2024, after coming through their ranks. He’s played 1,743 minutes from 22 matches this season, contributing to six goals [two goals and four assists].
His rapid development has seen clubs, especially in England and Spain, take notice. Although Eddie Howe’s side and the La Liga giants are linked, they haven’t made approaches so far.
AZ general manager Merijn Zeeman was a guest on ESPN NL’s Goedemorgen Eredivisie on Sunday. The Netherlands U21 international and his AZ teammates, Troy Parrott, Sven Mijnans and Mexx Meerdink, have all attracted interest from elsewhere.
On Goedemorgen Eredivisie, Hans Kraay Jr asked Zeeman whether he’s talked to agents or representatives of clubs about the aforementioned players.
When responding to that, the AZ official admitted there could be movements after this season.
“No, no. Zero interest. I can honestly say that. Anyway, it’s November, almost December. It seems pretty normal to me. Undoubtedly, things will pick up after the summer, but for now it’s still quiet,” he said.
