Transferred with a lot of promise from RC Lens back in 2011, Mehdi Abeid never quite managed to make it at Newcastle United, and two transfers to Greece and then back to France followed.
The now 24-year-old midfielder is enjoying life in Ligue 1 with Dijon, scoring one goal and picking up an assist in 12 appearances so far this season, and was interviewed about his return to his home country by So FOOT.
With the player having spent so long at St James’ Park, and playing with some good players in the Premier League like Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tioté, the French magazine couldn’t help but ask him about his time there, and some of his revelations might not go down too well with the fans.
He said, asked about England’s ‘different approach to football’: “Diets are rare. They’re not that clued on nutritionally. There’s ketchup and mayonnaise at the table, and sweets in the dressing room. They give you a lot of responsibility. What interests them is that you perform.
“What you do outside of the club, borderline, it doesn’t concern them. Newcastle is a student party city, and I went out from time to time, like all players.”
Of course, with the club performing so well in the Championship under Rafael Benitez, this shouldn’t be of much concern to fans right now, but considering the club came 16th and 15th during Abeid’s time there, you would hope certain changes have been made, especially when it comes to helping the development of the younger players.
