Edin Dzeko had a great spell at Manchester City but his career after departing the Etihad Stadium has also been significant.

The Bosnian scored over 100 goals for AS Roma and won two Coppa Italia titles with Inter Milan, reaching the Champions League final in 2023.

The 39-year-old now finds himself at Fiorentina.

His long-time agent Silvano Martina has revealed the story about his exit from Manchester City in 2015.

In a chat with Gazzetta dello Sport, Martina explained that if the striker hadn’t joined the Giallorossi, then sporting director Walter Sabatini would have been in trouble at Roma.

“In 2015, Sabatini told me he needed a strong striker, otherwise they would have massacred him in Rome.

“I suggested Dzeko, he lit a cigarette, took a drag, and said, ‘Call him, I’ll buy him.’ Edin was in Split, and Walter and I drove from Milan to close the deal.”

Dzeko had an impactful stint in Rome, playing five seasons with the club.

While he didn’t win silverware at the Giallorossi, he played multiple times in the Champions League and became a cult figure for the club’s fans because of his ability to score in big games.

Manchester City fans still hold Dzeko in high regard, as he was key in their Premier League title win in 2012, famously scoring their all-important equaliser against Queens Park Rangers in the last game of the 2011/12 season.
