Newcastle United and Brentford are chasing Stade Rennais’ Arnaud Kalimuendo this summer.
That’s according to L’Equipe, with the French newspaper reporting Newcastle United and Brentford have contacted the Ligue 1 side over a move for the striker.
At the weekend, Kalimuendo was an unused substitute in his side’s friendly draw against Genoa. Stade Rennais manager Habib Beye said the 23-year-old was left on the bench because he could leave in this window.
L’Equipe report the player, who has already turned down Leeds United, could be ‘heading to England’. Newcastle and Brentford are his suitors and the discussions are said to be advanced with the Bees.
Ouest-France relay this and then share their own updates.
They report an unnamed foreign club has accelerated their efforts to try and sign the Frenchman in recent days. They are aware of Brentford’s interest and then point out claims made elsewhere about Newcastle.
The French club are said to be denying talks are advanced. Stade Rennais sporting director Loïc Désiré was asked about the Premier League duo’s approach, and is quoted as saying: “There are discussions, but he hasn’t left yet.
“We’re moving on to phase three of our transfer window, which is to strengthen the attacking sector, to replace Arnaud if he leaves, or to accompany him, or to bring a different profile into the squad to be more efficient.”
