Aston Villa picked up a 1-0 win over Bologna in their Europa League opener on Thursday.

Ollie Watkins missed a penalty in the second-half, which didn’t help. The Italian club made it difficult for Unai Emery’s side throughout the game.

Bologna’s work-rate was clear to see and caused problems for Aston Villa, who had to be constantly on alert in possession.

Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport has rated Villans’ Morgan Rogers as ‘the worst’ performer.

The Englishman is handed a rating of only 5.5. Gazzetta note he made a glaring error that led to a chance for Bologna and also missed a good counter-attacking opportunity.

Watkins is also given 5.5. It’s the same for Jadon Sancho, who came off the bench and fluffed a chance to extend Aston Villa’s lead.

Marco Bizot is given a satisfactory 6.5, despite him making a key save in stoppage time to keep the scoreline at 1-0. Ezri Konsa, Ian Maatsen and John McGinn are also handed 6.5.

Surprisingly, Pau Torres is rated at 6, after a pretty good showing. Matty Cash is rated the same, as he struggled to keep up with Nicolo Cambiaghi out wide. Evan Guessand is also the same, as he couldn’t make a mark.

Aston Villa’s star performer was undoubtedly Boubacar Kamara. Gazzetta rate him at 7, noting how he constantly beat Bologna’s press and made vital clearances.

Unai Emery is handed 6.5, with the newspaper stating that his side had the ‘perfect first half’ but struggled later.
