Arsenal are said to be wanting to sign PSV Eindhoven Cody Gakpo in the summer window.
The Gunners’ interest in the forward was backed up De Telegraaf on Tuesday, two days after he helped his side beat Ajax in the KNVB Cup final.
His current deal expires in 2026 and Soccernews.nl explain the chances the 22-year-old fulfilling his contract is ‘nil’. That’s mainly because of the interest shown by Arsenal and a few other clubs.
The website compares his playing style with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and label him as the ‘Dutch Thierry Henry’. They further point out the selecting the club and the league is the ‘most important factor’ for Gakpo.
Taking this into consideration, Soccernews.nl suggest Arsenal ‘seem to be the best option’ for the Netherlands international.
The report further states: ‘The French attacker was in a class of his own at Arsenal, but was unable to reach his high level from London at FC Barcelona. Because do they know how to deal with a strong winger at Barcelona instead of a swift wing flash? No, they know that especially at Arsenal.’
‘Gakpo is an incomparable player by Dutch standards, but in international football Henry has shown in the past that you don’t need lightning-fast legs to make the difference from the flanks.
‘Gakpo’s height is similar, the playstyles have more than two similarities, but that devastating shot, choosing the moments and the way Gakpo manages to create space for himself (and his teammates) aren’t the main similarities between Gakpo and his teammates. illustrious Arsenal predecessor.’
Taking Gakpo’s style of play, physique and profile into account, Soccernews.nl say Arsenal would be the ‘best option’ for him.
It remains to be seen whether the PSV star will make a switch to the Emirates in the next window.
If he does end up at Arsenal, the outlet have warned him that he will need time to get used to the Premier League.
He has 18 goals and 15 assists from 42 matches in all competitions this season for PSV.
