Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade has revealed he’s stopped reading stories about himself, simply to avoid any negative influences.
Stern have an interview with the striker today. He discusses various topics in it, including turning his back on the news, particularly when it’s about himself.
Woltemade has been headline news for months following his €80m, potentially €95m, move to Newcastle on deadline day of the summer transfer window.
That in itself was a huge story but followed what had been a busy summer in which he was continually linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
Instead, he’s at St James Park but the news stories haven’t stopped. While he’s been flourishing in England to date, there’s been plenty of negativity about him in Germany.
Bayern Munich have been particularly salty about their failed move for him. Several of their alumni, chief among them Uli Hoeneß, have been critical of the striker and the fee that Newcastle paid for him.
Woltemade, though, isn’t giving them any of his attention. He admits that he’s now completely stopped reading the news to avoid any negativity.
“The fatal thing is: If you read ten great stories about yourself and then suddenly one negative one, your thoughts revolve only around that one bad story,” he said.
“The brain is cruel in that it likes to pick out the negative. That’s why I’ve stopped reading about myself. Talking about money is a rather German thing. No one in England has even mentioned my transfer fee to me yet.”
