Mikel Merino has enjoyed a fine return to the Premier League this season.

Having earned experience in England during a brief spell at Newcastle United, the Spaniard joined up with the Gunners from Real Sociedad – with the north London side forking out €32 million for him in the last summer transfer window.

Things didn’t map out as many would have envisaged for the player, with Gunners Mikel Arteta opting to position him up front for the latter stages of the season.

The holding midfielder has provided Arsenal with an added edge in their forward line. He has been able to bully defenders off the ball – even find the net on several occasions along the way.

“I don’t think you have to do anything differently as a striker than in other positions, Merino said in an exclusive interview with ABCSoccer. The principles are the same: each of us occupy our own zone and have a good rapport. Above all, it’s important to be in the right place at the right time.”

Merino also gave insight into who he feels is among the most talented at Arsenal and in the Premier League in general.

He told the outlet: “Odegaard is a world-class player. I love him very much, and he’s the best player in the Premier League, but a legend like [David] Silva is hard to compare. Just being able to do it is a compliment to Martin. They both have good feet and they link up in that playmaking position, and then each has their quirks and technical details.”
