Norwich City have endured a difficult run in the Championship this season, winning two of their 15 league matches so far. That sees them in the relegation zone with nine points.
The poor run saw the Canaries part ways with Liam Manning and appoint Philippe Clement as his successor on Tuesday.
The Norwich City move has allowed Clement to return to the bench for the first time since leaving Rangers in February.
Stephan Van der Heyden was part of the Belgian’s coaching staff at Ibrox and now follows him to Carrow Road. Sporza have spoekn to the new Norwich City assistant manager to discuss a few topics.
Sporza were curious to know whether Clement had other options before accepting the Norwich City job.
Ajax have been without a permanent manager since John Heitinga was shown the exit door earlier this month. Prior to joining Norwich City, the Belgian was said to be in the running to become Heitinga’s successor in Amsterdam.
A move to Ajax would have seen Clement manage in the top Dutch division and also in the Champions League. Van der Heyden explains why his compatriot didn’t consider the Eredivisie side.
Moves to 3 countries rejected before Norwich City
“No idea. Philippe did talk about it, but I don’t know if it was very concrete. I’m convinced that this isn’t the right time to go to Ajax. I think there’s too much uncertainty there, including within the board,” he said.
The assistant also mentioned Clement snubbing offers from the Middle East and Japan.
“I know the financial aspect isn’t the most important thing for Philippe. There were offers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Japan, but he also has to be convinced of the sporting side to be able to achieve anything,” Van der Heyden explained.
The assistant has also spoken about the issues they’ve already identified at Norwich City.
