New Arsenal star Cristhian Mosquera has insisted he wants to play for Spain on the international stage, despite also being available for Colombia.
That’s according to Semana, who relay comments from the Arsenal defender made to El Larguero on Cadena Ser in Spain.
Mosquera has found himself in the press focus this week after another impressive performance in Arsenal’s win over Athletic Club in the Champions League.
The summer signing from Valencia has been earning rave reviews after arriving from Valencia in the summer transfer window, stepping into the first team after William Saliba suffered a muscle injury.
He’s slotted in neatly, leading to a debate about where his international future may lie. Mosquera wants no doubt on that front, and insists his eyes are fully on Spain.
“Let’s wait and see, that’s the goal (to receive Luis de la Fuente’s call-up),” he said.
“I trained with them. I had the opportunity to train with them and I’m very happy. Luis, the truth is, is a very good person.
“There are great players in every position. I dedicate myself to working hard at my club, and when the opportunity comes, it’s God who will open the doors for me.”
That might be a decision partly helped by the Spanish influence in current Arsenal squad, with Mikel Arteta at the head and the likes of David Raya, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino alongside Mosquera.
That’s helped the defender to adapt to life in London quickly, something which could be repeated on the international stage.
“It’s true that having Spanish people helps you more. For day-to-day life, for adaptation, it helps me a lot,” he added.
. “The game is quite different from La Liga. A little more back and forth, more pace. It’s pretty good. When you go into the games, you have to prepare for what’s coming.”
