David Datro Fofana has made only four appearances for Chelsea since he joined them in January. In need of regular playing time to continue his development, the Blues let the forward join Union Berlin on a loan deal in the last window.
Operating mainly as a striker and at times as a winger, he has made 11 appearances this season, managing one assist in the process.
Earlier this week, the Chelsea owned player refused to shake hands with manager Urs Fischer after he was substituted in the German club’s Champions League defeat to Napoli. The 20-year-old issued a public apology to Fischer, his teammates, the club and their supporters.
Speaking to Sky Deutschland, former Union Berlin star Torsten Mattuschka has slammed the Ivory Coast international for his behaviour towards Fischer and has also urged the Bundesliga side to hand him a punishment.
Union Berlin have endured a difficult season as they are currently 15th in the table and Mattuschka believes the incident involving Fofana doesn’t help the club at this time.
“Give the coach your hand – even if he’s frustrated. We all understand that,” he said.
“That’s simply disrespectful to his coach – also to his teammates and the fans. Nobody needs that, especially not in this situation. He is a young player, [and] has recognised the mistake. There will certainly be a fine, and there should be. Perhaps you shouldn’t take the boy with you for a game or two so that he wakes up.”
Fofana will have to return to Chelsea after this season where he has a contract until 2029.
