Romelu Lukaku has revealed he returned to Chelsea to avenge the disappointment of not able to shine during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

The striker was at the west London club between 2011 and 2014, and during his time there, he was sent out on loan for two years.

He left Chelsea for Everton a permanent deal in 2014. Since then, the 29-year-old has established himself over the years and was vital in Inter’s title winning campaign during the 2020/21 season.

The Belgium international’s fine displays for the Serie A side convinced the Blues to invest in excess of €100m to secure his services last summer. His return to Chelsea didn’t go as planned as Lukaku struggled to shine under Thomas Tuchel’s orders.

The frontman returned to Inter on a loan deal and has now admitted he wants to get back to his best form with the Nerazzurri.

“The season at Chelsea gave me more motivation to do even better than before. I think that in a year everyone has forgotten some things that I am able to do in the field,” he told DAZN Italia, relayed by Calciomercato.

“That’s some kind of anger that I have inside of me. Which now the team also has, which did not win last year: all together we hope to do better and bring something home.”

When asked what he did wrong to leave, Lukaku explained: “So many things. I think that before, when I left, I wanted to take this revenge at Chelsea because when I was young, they had been my team for 11 years.”

“I had the opportunity to go back there and think I was the protagonist, but it wasn’t like that.”

“In March, when I learned there was an opportunity to come back here, I didn’t say anything, but towards the end of the season we did a great job with the club and I was able to come back here.”

“I only reflect at the end of the season, so after the last game I started to think about my situation alone. I saw that as a player with Inter I did well, the season at Chelsea was difficult for me. I had no doubts, that’s why I made the decision to come back here.”
