Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez claims he wants to win the title with the Villans.
At the weekend, the 32-year-old started in Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool. It was Unai Emery’s side fourth defeat in a row, and it includes two loses in the Premier League.
After the tie, the Aston Villa star had a chat with Telemundo Deportes and his comments are relayed by Olé in Argentina.
Aston Villa started the season on a bright note as they lost only once in the first nine Premier League games. They have one league win since October’s international break.
Emery’s side have dropped to ninth spot and are one point behind Chelsea, who are third in the table.
The Argentina international was asked if he aims to finish in the top five or six with the English club.
Responding to that, he said: “Top 5 or 6? That’s for losers. I didn’t sign up to be top 5 or 6, that’s for losers. I want to be at the top of everything, my goal is always to win the league. Thinking about being among the seven best is like a loser,” he said.
Aston Villa have six of their next nine Premier League matches at home. The stopper has sent a clear message to his teammates after a series of defeats in recent outings.
“These are moments that pass, we lost two games in a competition, we changed the eleven players in the Carabao Cup and then what happened in the Champions League, where we made six changes,” Martínez explained.
“In the end we have to give everyone minutes, we had to sell players to bring in new ones so it is a team that is in progress.
“Things are played from the first game, not only in February and March when things are defined.
“You have to take the points when you have to take them, but well, we lost Tottenham and Liverpool away so it’s not the end of the world either. Now we have home games, and we have to get the points.”
Martínez will return to the Argentina squad, after missing October’s fixtures due to suspension.
