Amadou Onana has made 14 appearances for Aston Villa since arriving at the club from Everton in the summer.

The Belgium international missed one game for the Villans due to injury and was left out of the squad for their EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace last month.

Earlier this month, Unai Emery left the midfielder on the bench in Aston Villa’s Champions League defeat to Club Brugge.

Onana has spoken to the Belgian reporters and expressed his unhappiness over not featuring against the Jupiler Pro League side. His comments are relayed Het Nieuwsblad.

He was at Anderlecht, RWS Bruxelles and Zulte Waregem’s youth teams before moving to TSG Hoffenheim’s academy in 2017. The 23-year-old had an opportunity to play in his country against Club Brugge, but it was denied by Emery.

“I regretted not being able to play for Aston Villa against Club Brugge last week. It would have been my first official match with a club in Belgium. But that was the coach’s choice,” he said.

On the Club Brugge fans’ reaction, Onana explained: “I was cheered by the supporters of Club Brugge and that surprised me. It’s bad that we lost, but a loss is always bad.”

The Aston Villa player is considered as a leader within Domenico Tedesco’s squad by some of his national teammates. The former Toffees man is pleased but doesn’t seem to be surprised with the recognition.

“It’s nice to hear that teammates refer to me as a leader. For me that’s something natural and I take that role seriously. Also coming to press conferences: I have no problem with that,” he added.
Onana has scored three goals for Aston Villa this season but is yet to open the account with the national team.
“I can contribute a lot offensively, we have already seen that this season with my three goals at Aston Villa. Of course, scoring is not immediately my priority. As a defensive midfielder I have other tasks. But scoring for De Red Devils would be nice,” Onana said.
