As it stands, it looks like Mason Greenwood’s move from Manchester United to Marseille is off. The city’s mayor went public to voice his opposition to the transfer, feeling it would bring shame on both the city and the Ligue 1 side.
That’s seen Lazio move back into the picture, even if they previously said they’d be moving for a better player instead.
Claudio Lotito, the Serie A club’s president, has lashed out at other clubs he believes are trying to hijack Lazio’s efforts to sign the Manchester United player.
There’s no concern from Lotito over image, Lazio don’t exactly have the best one anyway.
Calciomercato.it quote the club official as saying: “I offered €25m plus 50% of the resale, plus bonuses and commissions. Yet several clubs have slipped in to carry out a disruptive action.
“After Juventus, Napoli. It seems that everyone is jinxing it, they are terrified that we can take him and they want to ruin everything.”
Previous reports had stated Juventus walked away from the deal after a backlash of local opinion, so perhaps that worry can be dismissed for Lotito.
For now, the club president appears to want to be something of a celebrity this summer and is likely to speak further about this potential transfer.
Then, if Lazio are successful and reach an agreement with Manchester United, he’ll almost certainly be bragging in the media without a second thought about reputation damage.
