While Manchester United may be cursing themselves with some of the transfer influence they handed Erik ten Hag, they can count themselves lucky they didn’t let him get Brian Brobbey.
That’s at least if the latest from Valentijn Driessen is anything to go by, as he insists the striker can now be signed for less than €10m.
Voetbal Primeur cover comments from the journalist today made to Vandaag Inside, in which he states that Ten Hag wanted to pay €40m for the striker at one point.
“Ten Hag wanted to pay another €40m for him, now they are not even paying €10m,” he is quoted as saying on the striker.
This comes as part of a general focus on Brobbey in the Netherlands at this moment in time, with him continuing to struggle this season.
He’s managed just four goals in 28 games in the Eredivisie this season, a far cry from the 18 in 30 he had last season or the 13 in 32 the year before. It was those 18 goals, plus nine assists, that had Ten Hag looking to sign him for Manchester United.
They’ll now be very pleased that deal wasn’t signed and sanctioned, although Ajax are presumably feeling it was another opportunity missed now that Brobbey could depart for much less.
