With six goals conceded and one scored (and it was an own goal), Manchester United have started the new season under Erik ten Hag in the worst possible fashion.
The club seem to need more players throughout the entirety of the squad, with a new forward also on the cards, which is where Cody Gakpo comes in.
The Dutchman, who was the star of the show for PSV Eindhoven last year, has been a target for Manchester United for the past week and a bit, and a first move has been made, but not from the club’s end.
No, according to Eindhovens Dagblad, relayed by Soccer News, it’s Erik ten Hag who has taken matter into his own hands, as the manager ‘has already contacted Gakpo about a possible transition’.
As for Gakpo, it’s said that should PSV lose to Rangers in the Champions League qualifiers, ‘there is a chance’ the player could be sold.
However, for that to happen, the Eredivisie side ‘wants to look forward to a hefty transfer fee’, meaning their sale record ‘of €40m must be broken’.
If they are to qualify for the group stage, Gakpo could end up staying, at which point ‘a transfer would only take place if there is an offer that cannot be refused for all parties’.
