Roma have reportedly made Georginio Wijnaldum their number one target for the summer. Gazzetta Dello Sport says the Newcastle midfielder is in pole position to be the Italian side’s next signing.
Gazzetta claims that Newcastle should sell the player after the relegation to the Championship, and a deal with Roma should not be difficult since the clubs are on good terms after the transfers of Mapou Yanga M’biwa and Seydou Doumbia.
One of Roma’s officials is expected to meet Newcastle’s representatives in the next few days. No figures are mentioned in Gazzetta’s article.
Wijnaldum signed for Newcastle from PSV last summer for €20m, and is considered by Gazzetta to be too expensive for the Championship.
The player finished the last season with 11 goals and 5 assists in 40 appearances for the Magpies.
A loan move can’t be ruled out because Newcastle would surely be loathe to lose the Dutchman permanently.
