A couple of days ago, Liverpool loanee Sepp van den Berg published a farewell message to Schalke 04.
The 21-year-old was loaned to the Bundesliga side at the start of the season, and following his ten appearances there, he’s returning to the Reds this summer.
However, quoted by Voetbal International, Schalke sporting director André Hechelmann revealed that there are negotiations for a new deal with Liverpool.
“We are talking to him and his advisor,” he said, also claiming that the Instagram post doesn’t say a lot about the player’s future.
“I see the post more as a thank you from Sepp.”
Voetbal international points out that van den Berg is unlikely to have much playing time at Liverpool next season, and that’s why Schalke are hopeful of having him for another year, especially because he’s fully adapted to the German club.
Liverpool spent €1.9m to sign the defender from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in 2019. He even made four appearances for the Reds, but ended up being loaned out. He was first sent to Preston North End for the end of the 2021/22 season, and then made this move to the Bundesliga.
Before heading to Schalke, he signed a contract extension with the Reds until 2026, so he’s well protected if he goes out again this summer.
