Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has admitted they were left surprised by how quickly Newcastle United wrapped up a deal for Alexander Isak.
The Magpies completed their move for the Swedish star yesterday, signing him in a club-record £63m deal from the Spanish side.
The deal is one that has come of something a surprise, with the move being wrapped up over the course of this week after Newcastle’s interest was made clear on Monday.
Before then there had been little suggestion that Isak was a target for Eddie Howe and his team, with little to no reports even naming him as a potential target.
It seems that is something which ultimately worked to their advantage, allowing them to wrap up the big-money deal as quickly as possible and with zero competition to boot.
it’s a move that has caught many unawares, and it seems that even extends to those in charge at Real Sociedad, with Aperribay revealing how Newcastle got their man in an interview today.
“We feared that something like Alex could happen, but it was a surprise how things turned out,” Diario Vasco report him saying.
“The first contact from his entourage about the English club’s interest came on Monday at ten o’clock at night and then everything happened very quickly.
“It’s difficult for there to be another Isak case, we haven’t had any threats, but the market is open.”
