Liverpool’s sporting director Jörg Schmadtke is toying with the idea of resigning from his position at the club at the end of the January transfer window.
That’s according to Fussball Transfers, relaying information from Sky Germany, who say the 59-year-old’s ‘tendency’ is to depart at the end of the winter window.
Schmadtke joined Liverpool in May of this year on a short-term deal to help fill the void left behind by Julian Ward’s decision to leave the club.
The initial short-term deal was envisioned to cover the summer transfer window to help them oversee all transfers and help rebuild the squad, with big name players such as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson departing.
The idea of a short-term association was very much to Schmadtke’s planning as he had initially planned to returning after leaving VfL Wolfsburg at the start of the year.
It seems he is now toying with that idea again, with Sky Germany reporting that he is thinking of departing Liverpool once the January transfer window is done with.
That would essentially be six months in advance, with his contract currently set to run until the summer, when he was expected to leave anyway.
His idea now appears to be to ‘leave the planning of Liverpool’s summer transfer market in other hands’ and step away from the position at the end of next month.
Whether that’s a concrete idea or just one being thought about isn’t made clear but it’s an idea nonetheless and something to keep an eye on come the end of January.
