Liverpool have enjoyed a good start to the season as they registered their sixth straight win in the league against Southampton on Saturday and the Reds are the only team in the Premier League to have won all their matches so far.

Prior to the clash against the Saints, Joel Matip barely played for the Merseyside club this campaign and Jurgen Klopp handed the former Schalke man his first start of the season last weekend.

The 27-year-old was fielded as a right centre-back and was one of the standout players in his side’s latest 3-0 victory over Mark Hughes’ side. The defender also got his name on the scoresheet after he headed the ball into the net from a corner in the 21st minute.

His fine form has seen him make it to Gazzetta dello Sport’s European Team of the Week and the Italian newspaper have given him a rating of seven following his display against Southampton.

That sounds relatively low, but Gazzetta are tough with their grading.

After Matip’s latest performance, Klopp is likely to have a selection headache as the Liverpool manager has to decide whether to partner his compatriot or Joe Gomez alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the back four for the upcoming fixtures.
