Back in January 2019, Brighton & Hove Albion decided they wanted to take a gamble on Jan Mlakar, then at NK Maribor in Slovenia.

They spent £2.7m to acquire the now 21-year-old’s services, and immediately sent him back to the Prva Liga side for the rest of the campaign.

When he returned last June, Brighton then dispatched him on loan to Queens Park Rangers to spend a season in the Championship, in all likelihood for him to get accustomed to the English style of football ahead of potentially using him in the Premier League.

However, that hasn’t really gone to plan, as the striker has only played 220 minutes for QPR, spread over eight appearances.

He’s only featured in four match day league squads since November 22nd, and it appears Brighton could be given a chance to send him elsewhere for the second half of the season, this time in Italy.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Trapani Calcio in Serie B are interested in the Slovenia U21 international for the second half of the season.

If that is the case and an offer is made, quick negotiations will need to take place, as Mlakar’s loan with QPR will need to be cancelled and a new one put together with the Italian side, all in less than 48 hours.

Should the forward end up in Italy, he would be returning to a country he already knows well, having lived there for two and a half years there between 2015-18, during which he was contracted to Fiorentina and spent six months on loan with Venezia.
