Uruguay legend Diego Godín has shared his excitement at the prospect of Marcelo Bielsa taking the manager’s job, which would be his first position since Leeds United.
He has been speaking to ESPN, relayed by Direct TV Sports, after Bielsa emerged as the leading candidate for the position.
Uruguay are currently being managed on an interim basis by Marcelo Broli after previous boss Diego Alonso left following the World Cup in Qatar.
As is often the case, several managers have been linked with the position since Alonso’s departure, but it was Bielsa who was named as the leading candidate this week.
He remains out of work after leaving Leeds United last year, failing to take up a new role despite there seemingly being interest in the Premier League throughout this season.
Bielsa remains a coach in demand after his time at Elland Road, where he earned rave reviews throughout his tenure despite things falling apart towards the end.
The good times far outweighed the bad, though, and Godín is certainly interested in the former Leeds United boss managing his country.
“I can’t give an opinion because I have the utmost respect for all the coaches who could coach the Uruguayan national team, which has a lot of history,” he said.
“I simply heard the news, I respect it from a distance, and we’ll talk when we know who the coach will be.
“It was a surprise because it was a name that had not been talked about in the last few days and, obviously, a name as strong as Bielsa’s, when it is mentioned by a team or a national team, generates surprise and excitement among the people because he is a great coach.”
