Luiz’s move took attention away from the signing of Marcos Alonso, something which was agreed earlier.

Alonso had been at Fiorentina since 2013, having moved there from Bolton Wanderers. Before his first spell in English football, Alonso was at Real Madrid, which may explain a curious story from Spanish newspaper AS on Sunday.

AS reckon that Alonso had an offer to join Barcelona, but he preferred to not to snap it up, instead waiting to see what else came his way. Chelsea made an approach, met Fiorentina’s demands, and then AS reckon it was an easy choice for the defender.

The newspaper imply that Alonso coming through the Real Madrid youth system was somehow behind the choice, but it would still of course be surprising.

Barcelona were linked with many defenders over the summer, but perhaps this story is something building in Madrid circles, because it’s something they’d obviously like to believe.
