Even prior to Ajax’s match against Feyenoord at the weekend, things hadn’t been going well at the Amsterdam club.
It was felt their summer transfer window was poor and the squad, and management behind it, wasn’t capable of a title challenge. After the game against Feyenoord was cancelled midway through, with Ajax losing 3-0 at the time, there’s more drama today in the Dutch media.
Part of that brings in Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek. Sunday evening saw football director Sven Mislintat fired from his role, with confidence dropping after the summer and claims he’d used a company he has shares in to help a transfer happen.
Many fans were already annoyed with him, and Monday’s edition of AD says Van de Beek was one of the reasons. The story goes that Ajax manager Maurice Steijn wanted the Manchester United player, but Mislintat had other ideas.
AD state: ‘The fact that he wanted Donny van de Beek and Nicolas Tagliafico will probably go down well with the supporters with their whining about the Ajax DNA, which no one knows exactly. But you can still ask yourself whether Ajax would be helped if those boys were to return. Van de Beek has rarely played in recent years…’
Should the midfielder’s current situation continue at Manchester United, then there’s surely a good chance Steijn could get him during the January window… that’s if he’s still in a job at Ajax.
