Erik ten Hag has insisted talk of Christian Eriksen leaving Manchester United for Ajax is just coming from supporters and unlikely to happen.
The Manchester United manager has been speaking to Viaplay Sport Netherlands about life at Old Trafford and Eriksen’s current status in the squad.
The Danish midfielder has found himself out of the picture under Ten Hag this season, with the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo pushing him further down the pecking order.
That’s led to questions about his future at Manchester United, particularly with his future in Denmark’s squad being debated as he’s not getting regular minutes at club level.
The growing belief is that he could be a part of the major clear out of the squad anticipated for the summer, with reports making it clear that the new management team under Sir Jim Ratcliffe are planning major changes and numerous departures.
A return to former club Ajax has been mooted, with them also planning a rebuild and perhaps looking at former stars to help form an experienced base to lead the club forwards.
Ten Hag says that is nothing but supporter talk, though, and Eriksen isn’t on the way out of Manchester United at this point.
“We have competition there and the emergence of Kobie Mainoo means there is one less spot. Eriksen is now suffering from this,” he said.
“He will certainly still be very important for us. His qualities are progressive passing, and we will really need that in this competition.
“For the rest, he’s just waiting for his chance. No player is satisfied with a reserve role, not even him. That is also unhealthy if you are satisfied with it. Sure, he doesn’t like this, and he knows he has to wait. But he can’t wait anymore, he just wants to play.”
“Supporter talk. Nothing more than that,” they add him stating ‘resolutely’ when asked on a potential return to Ajax for the midfielder.
