Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has played down his super save against Aston Villa, even if he was proud to make it.

Raya has been speaking at a Spanish press conference today when he was asked about his save in the win over Aston Villa last month by AS.

The goalkeeper was the hero of the day in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the end of last month, pulling off several impressive saves to ensure he left with a clean sheet.

His best was undoubtedly one to deny Ollie Watkins from close range, with a save that is likely to be one of the best of the season.

He was forced to act quickly to recover from a deflected Amadou Onana effort which bounced off of the bar, heading straight to Watkins whose diving header looked destined for the back of the net.

Instead, the Arsenal goalkeeper palmed it away with a stunning, one handed left-handed save that left Watkins and Aston Villa devastated.

It was a brilliant, game defining stop from the Spanish goalkeeper, although he insists it was something he and Arsenal train for repeatedly.

“Well, the truth is that it’s a stop that is very repetitive in all the years I’ve been a footballer in training,” he said.

“When we train, we do many actions such as throwing yourself, getting up and going to another ball. But the context is different.

“The context is in a match, and you try to replicate it there. And the truth is that I’m super happy to have been able to do that stop since at the time of the match we were 0-0 and if they had scored, it would have been very complicated, especially against Aston Villa away from home.

“So, I’m super proud and super happy to be able to help the team in those actions.”
