Earlier this week, we covered an article in Sport stating Sunderland were close to signing former Real Madrid right-back Alvaro Arbelos.
The news was a bit random, if you ask us, especially coming from a Catalan newspaper who clearly have a penchant for Barcelona, and we didn’t think much of it.
Just in case you believed it, there’s been an update this week, but this time it’s from Mundo Deportivo, who are also Barcelona friendly.
This time, there’s no mention of Sunderland (no surprise there), with Sport claiming the veteran full-back could in fact sign for Espanyol instead.
The La Liga club have been looking for some good deals this summer, and the prospect of signing such an experienced player for their backline would surely represent a coup, even if he’s on a free.
Now, it remains to be seen if a player who played for Real Madrid from 2001-2006 and then from 2009-2016 would want to play for a Barcelona based club, but it certainly makes more sense than Sunderland.
This is nothing against the Black Cats, it’s just that Barcelona is probably a nicer place to live in than Sunderland.
If you disagree with that statement, you can at least come to terms with the fact the sea in the north of England isn’t as blue as in the picture above.
