This weekend, rumours emerged from the English press saying Portuguese side Sporting would be keen on making a move for Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell.

The player would arrive in Lisbon as a replacement for William Carvalho, who is in the middle of a West Ham United transfer saga.

But Portuguese newspaper A Bola has a short paragraph today saying the story doesn’t make much sense, because Sporting don’t have any intention to sign a new midfielder.

They claim the Lions only have one spot in the squad for the season, and that should be for a striker. That is, only in case this signing comes in very favourable conditions, which in other words means ‘extremely cheap’.

William Carvalho’s departure has been planned for a while now, and players such as Rodrigo Battaglia, Radosav Petrović and João Palhinha are all being prepared to replace him at the club.

It’s not a secret that Portuguese clubs like to sell, but not to buy, so A Bola rubbishing Sporting signing Jack Rodwell makes a lot of sense.

Sunderland would have to look elsewhere.
