Sunderland’s summer pursuit of Jhon Lucumí was one their big ones that got away, and the case is still unfolding in Italy.
After weeks of negotiations and public statements from his agent, the Colombian defender stayed at Bologna, despite a reported €28m offer from the newly promoted side.
Now, as reported by AS Colombia, Bologna have “surrendered” and are waiting for the player’s decision on a new contract. Giovanni Sartori, the club’s sporting director, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that talks are ongoing and the final word belongs to Lucumí.
“We are talking to him about a contract renewal and we would be delighted if he stayed. I don’t know what he thinks, you should ask him. We’ll meet again later and he’ll tell us what he’s decided,” Sartori said.
According to the report, Bologna have offered Lucumí a deal worth around €2m per year with improved terms. The 27-year-old recently reached 100 Serie A appearances and has been a constant starter since joining in 2022.
Sartori also made a point of praising the defender’s attitude after missing out on a Premier League move. He highlighted how he handled the disappointment with maturity: “After having to give up the Premier League this summer, he has returned with great professionalism.”
Sunderland chance not over yet
The sporting director stressed that, despite having to walk away from Sunderland’s significant offer, Lucumí has continued to show commitment and focus throughout the start of the season – even after an impactful mistake in the league opener.
Despite the renewal proposal, Lucumí has yet to give an answer. Bologna hope he will sign and remain at the club at least until the 2026 World Cup. Strong performances with Colombia could reignite Premier League interest.
For now, Sunderland’s record bid still lingers as a turning point. The defender’s next decision will determine whether that chapter is truly closed or only on pause.
