In November, Corriere dello Sport reported Sunderland and Newcastle United are competing for Lazio’s Matteo Guendouzi.

It became obvious the midfielder’s future was being discussed due to the Italian club’s poor financial situation.

Lazio were under a transfer ban in the summer. To avoid another sanctions, they need to bring money in during January and reduce their operating costs. This would make Guendouzi’s sale convenient as he is one of their most valuable players.

It’s now reported again that the 26-year-old isn’t interested in a move to Sunderland.

Journalist Giulio Cardone spoke to RadioSei about the France international’s future. He made it clear the Black Cats have an offer on the table but Guendouzi would look elsewhere if he returns to England.

He said – relayed by Lazialita: “Sunderland made a significant offer for Guendouzi, worth €25m. The first person Sarri wants to veto is the Frenchman.

“Guendouzi would like to go to England right now, but not to Sunderland: he wants something more.”

Guendouzi’s desire to to play in European football could be decisive.

He would ideally want to play for France at the World Cup next year. For that, he needs to impress at the highest level, with Lazio not playing in any European competition.

Besides, Guendouzi is 26 and would want a club that is already well-established in either the Champions League or Europa League. That is perhaps why Sunderland should now focus on other targets.
