French sides Toulouse and Strasbourg are very interested in Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle this summer.

Foot Mercato report that the Ligue 1 duo are both keen on the 23-year-old, who does not intend to renew his current contract at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland reject bid

According to FM’s information, Toulouse are currently the frontrunners for Romain Mundle’s signature and have made an initial approach to Sunderland for him. The Black Cats rejected it.

Toulouse do not intend to give up, though. In fact, they are planning to return to Sunderland with a second offer this week. The nature of their bids is not mentioned by Foot Mercato at this point.

But the website does point out that the French side have a history of signing talent from England in recent years. Charlie Cresswell is the obvious example of that, joining from Leeds United in a €4.5m deal in 2024. He’s since gone on to establish himself as a key player at the club.

Sunderland contract until 2028

Now it appears they are looking to repeat that success with Romaine Mundle. He’s currently valued at €8m by the likes of Transfermarkt after he joined Sunderland in 2024 in a €1.8m deal.

He struggled for game time at the Stadium of Light last season, with 14 appearances in the Premier League but just 12% of the available minutes. He was in the first team just 5% of the time across the campaign.

That is why, perhaps, he does not intend to extend his deal, which runs until 2028. That leaves Sunderland in a precarious position as letting his contract run for another year would put him in the final year of his deal, and them needing to sell at a reduced price.

That is also, presumably, why Toulouse and potentially Strasbourg are moving now. The French duo have seen an opportunity and are moving for the 23-year-old, despite Sunderland blocking them for now.
