Sunderland’s Arthur Masuaku will join RC Lens in the winter market, according to a report from Lensois.com.

The DR Congo international arrived at the Stadium of Light on a free transfer last August. Régis Le Bris has regularly overlooked him this season, limiting him to 127 minutes from three league matches.

Masuaku, who represented his country at AFCON, hasn’t featured for Sunderland since October.

He’s unhappy at Sunderland and has been planning to leave in the winter market. The former Beşiktaş man tried to return to Turkey, but Trabzonspor rejected him.

Lens have identified the 32-year-old as a target and want to sign him on loan. He knows the club well as he spent time at their academy between 2003 and 2008.

At the weekend, Foot Mercato reported Lens have made advances to sign him. The Ligue 1 side have reached an agreement with both the player and Le Bris’ side. Lens won’t have an option or obligation to make his stay permanent.

Lensois.com now pick up on that and report that the French club are ‘eagerly waiting’ for their former player to arrive.

At the weekend, Lens suffered a 3-1 defeat to Marseille. Pierre Sage, their manager, didn’t have options on the left wing-back position. He started right-back Ruben Aguilar on the left side against Marseille.

After the match, the manager hinted the club will soon sign a new player on the left side.

“A balance we need to readjust on the left side of our defence,” he said.

“To perform well, we need, in my opinion, more alternatives. The club is fully aware of this and is working towards it.”

“The coming days look brighter. It’s primarily a balance we need to readjust on the left side of our defence. Our aim is to have more solutions, because currently we are somewhat hampered by this weakness.”

According to the report, Masuaku is expected to arrive at Lens this week to sign the contract.
