Towards the end of last month, Yann M’Vila revealed that Sunderland are the only lower division side he would consider joining, if they were to make an offer for him.

The midfielder spent the 2015/16 season on loan with the Black Cats, when they were still in the Premier League, managing a goal and five assists from 40 games.

On January 17th, Foot Mercato reported Sunderland ‘want’ the 33-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving Olympiacos last summer. It was also stated they have started talks to secure his services this month.

Michael Beale’s side have to rush if they wish to bring the Frenchman back to the Stadium of Light in January. That’s because L’Equipe claim FC Metz are interested in signing him.

The Ligue 1 side find the former Sunderland man’s profile and experience interesting and their director of football, Pierre Dréossi, knows him from their time at Rennes.

It’s claimed Metz have to find an agreement with M’Vila over salary and this seems to be significant for a club of their stature.

M’Vila has already flirted with the Black Cats and they could miss out on a free signing, if they don’t act quickly.
