Sunderland have contacted Borussia Mönchengladbach regarding back up goalkeeper Jonas Omlin.
That’s according to Sky Sports Germany. They report that Sunderland have made contact about the 32-year-old. They’re eyeing up a potential move before the end of the January transfer window.
According to their information, talks are ongoing between the two clubs, but no agreement has been reached yet. Omlin is available for a transfer after losing his starting position to Moritz Nicholas last season. He hasn’t played for the German side this season.
His current deal runs until 2027, so selling him this month could be beneficial. Gladbach are working to reduce their squad this month and he’s one of the candidates.
BILD reported earlier today that the goalkeeper was ‘on the verge of leaving’. They also named Sunderland as a potential destination. There was no mention of the nature of the potential deal there either, though.
The move would be a curious one for Omlin to make given he would almost certainly be swapping one back up role for another. He would not be replacing Robin Roefs at the Stadium of Light, that’s for certain.
Sunderland also have Anthony Patterson and Simon Moore as back up as well, so they’re not short on options either. Sky say talks are underway, though, so perhaps Sunderland have a plan in place to make it all make sense.
