Sunderland have emerged as a contender to sign Marseille’s Geoffrey Kondogbia.
The defensive midfielder’s situation at the Ligue 1 side has encouraged Sunderland to make an approach in the summer.
He joined Marseille from Atlético Madrid for around €8m in June 2023. Prior to that, a few Premier League sides had looked at the 33-year-old.
At that time, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers interest, and he reportedly fancied a move to England.
Sunderland interested in Kondogbia
Three years later, the French-born Central African Republic international would move to the Premier League.
That’s according to Media Foot, who report the Black cats are showing interest in Geoffrey Kondogbia.
The experienced midfielder played 1,016 minutes from 17 matches of which 593 were in the league this season. Due to his restricted role and mixed performances, he’s one of the Marseille players likely to leave.
The former Inter Milan and Valencia man’s future at the club is uncertain also because of his high salary. Therefore, the French club want to get rid of him and he would ‘clearly be heading towards the exit’ door in the summer.
Media Foot insist the player could potentially be heading to England where Régis Le Bris’ side are keen.
Sunderland can take advantage of his situation at Marseille to bring him to the Stadium of Light for a reasonable price.
Our take: Sunderland hope to repeat Xhaka success

Last summer, Sunderland signed 33-year-old Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen, and he’s starred this season. Le Bris and his side will be hoping for Geoffrey Kondogbia to have a similar impact, if they end up securing his services.
The Marseille player’s contract expires in 2027 and his value, as per Transfermarkt, is now €4m.
