Sunderland‘s Granit Xhaka has closed the door on Chelsea, after refusing to leave his current club.

The Switzerland international arrived at the Stadium of Light from Bayer Leverkusen in July 2025.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had managed the midfielder at the Bundesliga side and was keen on reuniting with him at Stamford Bridge.

Last week, former Switzerland forward Giorgio Contini expressed his annoyance that the Chelsea claims are getting more coverage than their World Cup campaign.

The national team have made it to the quarter final, after overcoming Colombia on Tuesday.

Sunderland star responds to Chelsea links 

Five days ago, Sport Witness relayed news that the 33-year-old has closed the door on Chelsea.

After yesterday’s match, DAZN spoke to Granit Xhaka to discuss Switzerland’s latest win and about the Chelsea links. When responding to the latter, he committed his future to Sunderland.

“Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy. I have decided to stay where I am; the most important thing is family. I am ready to make history with them,” he said.

That should put an end to any possibility of the former Arsenal man leaving the Black Cats.

Régis Le Bris’ side finished seventh last season and have qualified for the Europa League. The Blues, on the other hand, didn’t make it to Europe.

Granit Xhaka’s Switzerland will face Argentina in their quarter final this weekend.

The clash between his national team and Colombia ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes, and the former won via a penalty shootout.

On their latest win, Xhaka explained: “It’s incredible. We know what a World Cup represents. We created the opportunity for ourselves. Many teams have lost on penalties. Today is a special day for all of us.

“I still can’t quite believe what’s happening. The more time passes, the better I get. I’ve gained a lot of experience, with my teammates, my coaches, and the support of my family and friends. All of this makes me happy.”
