Sunderland are one of the sides interested in a move for Heerenveen midfielder Thom Haye this summer, with the Dutch side already eyeing replacements.
That’s according to Leeuwarder Courant, who say Heerenveen’s interest in Chelsea youngster Charlie Webster comes because of Sunderland’s interest in Haye.
They explain that the Dutch side are expecting a need to overhaul their midfield this summer with Haye receiving interest from Sunderland and Toulouse, Rami Al Hajj leaving on a free transfer and Tibor Halilovic looking for a new club.
The ‘imminent departure’ of those three means the Frisians are looking for replacements and Webster is one of them.
The newspaper makes no mention of how far Sunderland have gone in terms of signing Haye but insists that the Black Cats are ‘interested’ in the 28-year-old.
The Dutchman has two goals and three assists in 31 games in the Eredivisie this season and two goals and eight assists in 50 games for the club since joining them for €750,000 in January 2022.
His current deal with Heerenveen expires in 2024 and it seems they are expecting a sale this summer, the last in which they can make money from a deal, rather than him departing on a free next year.
Whether a move to Sunderland is on the cards remains to be seen but the Dutch side certainly believed Haye is on his way out regardless.
