Sunderland have Montpellier’s Modibo Sagnan on their agenda for the summer window, according to a report from France.

The French club have been relegated from the Ligue 1 after finishing at the bottom of the table.

Montpellier, led by president Laurent Nicollin, are planning to reshape their squad for next season. Midi Libre, a newspaper local to the French club, takes a look at the situation, and mention Sunderland’s interest in Sagnan.

The 26-year-old left FC Utrecht for Montpellier in February 2024 and played 27 Ligue 1 games this season. His contract is until 2028, but the report states the defender is one of their regulars with an uncertain future.

Sunderland are the only club named as the centre-back’s suitor as they have their eyes set on him for this summer.

They can return to the Premier League by overcoming Sheffield United in the Champions League playoff final later this weekend. If the Black Cats fail to beat the Blades, they can take advantage of Montpellier’s relegation to try and sign the Mali international.

Régis Le Bris’ side could face competition for Leeds United, who secured direct promotion to the Premier League.

Last month, Foot Mercato reported the Whites are keen on Sagnan, who could move to England in the upcoming window.
