Sunderland are interested in bringing Toulouse FC’s Charlie Cresswell back to the UK this summer, according to Jeunes Footeux.
The centre-back graduated from Leeds United’s youth system and was promoted to their first team in 2020. The Whites sold him to the Ligue 1 club in July of last year.
Since arriving in France, the 22-year-old featured regularly as he played 2,850 minutes from 34 games. His form for Toulouse has also seen him end up on Sunderland’s agenda.
His performances helped him return to the England U21 squad and is currently with them at U21 European championship. The defender scored in the 3-1 win over Czech Republic U21s and played the full 90 minutes in the goalless draw against Slovenia U21.
Jeunes Footeux say Cresswell’s meteoric rise has seen Sunderland take notice. The Black Cats secured promotion to the Premier League and are looking to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.
This is where the former Leeds man comes into the picture and the report states Régis Le Bris’ side see him as ‘an ideal target’. The possibility of returning to England may convince him to join Sunderland.
Cresswell’s contract lasts until 2028, and Transfermarkt currently value him at €10n. Jeunes Footeux indicate Toulouse are unlikely to sell him for €10m, meaning Sunderland have to offer more than that to secure his services.
