According to a claim in the Turkish media, Sunderland remain interested in signing Galatasaray midfielder Gabriel Sara.
The 26-year-old’s future with the Super Lig leaders looks uncertain and a move to the Premier League is an option this month.
January has seen reports in Turkey that Galatasaray are looking to replace the former Norwich City man. He had two seasons with the Canaries before his €18m transfer during the 2024 summer window.
We covered reports earlier this month that Sunderland are ‘seriously interested’ in bringing the player to the Stadium of Light, but face competition from Fulham.
Fotospor report on the latest developments regarding Sara. Sunderland are still in the mix to sign the Brazilian, with Leeds United the other English team mentioned.
Galatasaray are open to selling the central midfielder in this transfer window following interest from the Premier League. The Turkish media outlet says Cimbom will listen to offers at €20m+.
Sunderland effort would see Gala go for replacement
However, Gala will only allow Sara to leave this month if they can sign a replacement central midfielder. The Istanbul club have been linked with Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte, however, he’s likely to remain at Old Trafford due to the recent managerial change.
Subsequently, Galatasaray have now turned their attention to Auxerre’s Kevin Danois after following the 21-year-old for some time. The youngster made his debut during the 2022/23 season and is a regular for the Ligue 1 club.
If Sunderland or any other clubs are prepared to offer Sara’s valuation, then Gala will start transfer talks to sign Danois from the French side.
Sara has made 26 appearances this season, scoring two goals. The Brazilian started last Sunday’s Super Cup final defeat against Fenerbahçe on the bench, but came on at half time.
He’s contracted to Galatasaray until June 2029, but is unlikely to see that out.
