Sunderland are about to have a new manager taking charge, according to reports from the Italian media.
CalcioMercato.it shows up with an exclusive story saying the Black Cats have an agreement with Raphael Wicky.
They report that Sunderland and the coach have agreed to a two-year contract, with an option for another year should things go well.
They add that Sunderland want to ‘start again’ with the Switzerland coach after a ‘nightmare season’ and failure to make it back to the Premier League. That will be the aim for the 47-year-old, who has been out of work since leaving BSC Young Boys in March.
He had been in charge of the Swiss club since June 2022, and left them with a record of 51 wins, 20 draws and 17 losses in 88 games.
Prior to his work there, he had managed FC Basel, the United States’ U-17 national team and Chicago Fire FC.
Sunderland have been looking for a manager since the sacking of Michael Beale back in February this year. The club had assistant Mike Dodds as a caretaker manager in the final months of the season, and now managed to find their new boss a few weeks before the transfer window opens.
