In the summer transfer window, Sport Witness closely covered Sunderland’s interest in Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi.
The Black Cats were desperate for the defender, who was keen on the deal. Despite their best efforts, the parties couldn’t convince Bologna into selling the player.
There was pride at the Rossoblu about keeping hold of the Colombian, who has returned to his best again this season.
There is still a lingering doubt about his future, though. Lucumi is yet to sign a new deal at Bologna, where his current contract runs out in the summer of 2027.
A decisive few months are approaching regarding his future, with Gazzetta dello Sport take a close look.
Gazzetta dello Sport: Key Points
Italy’s pink daily report that Bologna’s new deal is already on Lucumi’s table. But now, the Colombia international will make a decision about after the World Cup ends.
Further, Gazzetta add why the move to Sunderland never went through.
The key reason was Bologna’s sales of Sam Beukema and Dan Ndoye. They didn’t want to lose another player, especially since the Black Cats didn’t make an approach when his release clause was active.
Sunderland could have had a chance if they offered the €28m when his release clause was relevant. This is used to blame Regis Le Bris’ side, but things are now looking quite complex for Bologna once again.
Analysis: Sunderland and Jhon Lucumi
Gazzetta aren’t sure if Sunderland still want Lucumi, but the player will again be keen on a move to England. Manchester City were previously mentioned as a suitor, although nothing has moved in that direction.
The 27-year-old’s stock is still quite high in Italy. Even if he is dealing with an injury right now, he has again showcased his ball-playing ability and recovery pace quite well.
Sunderland should now look to come back in for Lucumi. There probably won’t be a better chance at signing him than the coming summer, unless other Premier League clubs genuinely join the race.
He’s expected to play for Colombia at the World Cup, which will obviously have an impact on his value depending on how he performs.
Contract Situation and Agents
Jhon Lucumi’s Bologna contract runs until the end of June, 2027. That puts the Serie A club under some pressure and without a renewal it will impact his value.
Transfermarkt currently rank him at being worth €25m. That’s the highest it’s been, rising from around €17m last summer. The amount is probably below his true value, given Sunderland offered €28m.
The defender is represented by Wasserman, who have multiple Premier League clients.
