Sunderland may need an improved transfer offer should the Premier League side return for CA Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz in the summer.

Wednesday’s edition of Diario de Noticias covers Sunderland’s interest from January and the winger’s valuation.

The Black Cats added Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi as their squad in the winter market. The wingers have arrived at the Stadium of Light from Anderlecht and Maccabi Netanya respectively.

Angulo’s preferred position is on the left wing, while Ta Bi operates on the right side of the attack.

The Ecuador international joined on deadline day and prior to his arrival, Régis Le Bris’ side wanted to sign Muñoz.

Sunderland first Víctor Muñoz attempt

Osasuna paid Real Madrid €5m to acquire 50% of his rights in July 2025. Víctor Muñoz has scored five goals and contributed five assists from 2,196 minutes from 29 matches this season.

His performances convinced the English club to make concrete advances in the last window.

Last month, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of Sunderland’s late attempt to sign the 22-year-old.

The Black Cats initially offered €20m and returned with an improved bid of €25m plus Eliezer Mayenda on loan until the end of this season. However, both the Spaniard and the La Liga side turned down these proposals.

In line for first call-up

Muñoz hasn’t made his debut for Spain or represented them at youth levels. However, he is contention to receive his first call-up from manager Luis de la Fuente this month.

La Roja face Argentina in the 2026 Finalissima and Egypt [friendly] during the upcoming international break.

Due to Athletic Club Bilbao star Nico Williams’ injury, De la Fuente is looking for options. The newspaper say the Sunderland target has emerged as a strong contender, along with RCD Mallorca’s Jan Virgili.

Black Cats offer makes sense

Le Bris’ side would have identified the Spaniard as a player with potential for growth. He may have been an opportunity to improve their attack immediately and help them raise funds in the long run.

However, Osasuna’s decision to not accept Sunderland’s proposal also make sense. This allowed him to enjoy minutes and is in contention to make debut for Spain this month.

Sunderland obviously saw something, and nearly got a future Spain international for less than €30m.

Transfermarkt state his valuation has increased from €1m in June to €10m since joining Osasuna, although that’s largely irrelevant out in the real world.

He has a contract until 2030, which includes a €40m release clause. Osasuna had pointed this out to Sunderland, and a national team debut will make their €40m stance stronger.
