Sunderland’s chase for Jhon Lucumi ended in failure in the summer.
The player’s agent made it clear the defender wanted to leave to Bologna. Despite this, the Italian club stood firm and kept the Colombian.
There have been suggestions Sunderland are still keen on the player. Now, there is further transfer hope for the Black Cats.
Bologna sporting director Giovanni Sartori spoke to La Repubblica about the 27-year-old’s situation. He said, relayed by Tuttomercatoweb: “We’re talking to him about a contract renewal and we’d be delighted if he stayed. I don’t know about him, just ask him.”
Hinting at a meeting with the player’s entourage, Sartori said: “We’ll meet again later and he’ll tell us what he’s decided. After having to give up the Premier League this summer, he’s come back with great professionalism.”
Further encouragement for Regis Le Bris’ side has been handed out by TMW themselves.
The outlet claim that there is already a renewal offer on the table from Bologna.
The Rossoblu are offering Lucumi €2m net per year until 2029. So far, there has been no response from the player’s entourage.
A new meeting has been scheduled between the two parties for negotiations. The signs haven’t been positive as the South American himself is yet to decide his future.
This is a positive for Sunderland, with the defender’s contract at Bologna running out in 2027.
