Sunderland were keen on signing Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi in the summer window. Despite their best attempts, the Italian side managed to keep the centre-back.

Lucumi’s contract with Bologna runs out in 2027. Vincenzo Italiano’s side want to extend that but are struggling to secure Lucumi to a new contract.

This can lead to the Colombian’s exit in January.

Calciomercato report renewal attempts continue to be difficult. Sunderland are still interested, even if they managed to sign Omar Alderete from Getafe in the summer.

Lucumi has impressed in parts this season but his valuation is likely to have reduced due to the contract scenario.

Sunderland were believed to have offered €28m in the summer. Now, they can offer ‘half the price’, with the outlet claiming an approach at around €14m could happen.

Bologna are already hunting for potential replacements. Calciomercato relay information from Gazzetta dello Sport about this, with Union Saint-Gilloise’s Fedde Leysen being monitored. Corriere dello Sport have added Diogo Leite and Rafa Marin to the shortlist.

Bologna don’t want to lose the player for free in 2027. Due to their struggles for a new deal, a sale would make sense.
