Sunderland and Leeds United are among the clubs to have taken notice of Sevilla’s Rubén Vargas.
Last month, multiple claims from Spain covered Leeds United interest in the forward. On December 16th, Orgullo Biri stated he could be an ideal player for Daniel Farke’s side. Three days later, the same outlet reported the Whites had overtaken Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Towards the end of December, ABC Sevilla reported Sunderland and Leeds United are the most interested clubs. They also stated the Premier League duo could secure his services for €10m in the winter market.
Fast forward to January and Thursday’s edition of Diario de Sevilla looks at his situation. The newspaper backs up interest shown by Régis Le Bris’ side and Leeds United in the Switzerland international.
Sevilla have been struggling economically, and a player’s sale can help them improve their finances. They have identified Vargas as one of the candidates to sell, which would have encouraged Sunderland, Leeds United and his other suitors.
Vargas’ potential exit in this window is now wobbling. In fact, he’s unlikely to leave the La Liga side after suffering a setback.
Fresh injury stops Leeds United and Sunderland in their tracks
At the weekend, the player returned to the pitch in Sevilla’s 1-0 defeat to Celta Vigo. It was his first appearance since recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in November.
Vargas picked up a fresh injury, and two days ago the Andalusian club confirmed an injury to ‘his left femoral biceps’. The new setback could keep him on the sidelines for around two months.
Therefore, Sevilla can no longer consider him as a sale candidate for January. The new development around Vargas means Sunderland and Leeds United have to look elsewhere to improve their attack.
Player may not be suitable for Premier League

Bournemouth has also been keen and they’ve cancelled a potential investment.
Diario de Sevilla state: ‘English clubs seem to have been left holding the chequebook and pressing the button on Wyscout to find another option. Leeds, Bournemouth, and Sunderland claim to have been interested, but this latest muscle injury to the Swiss player has surely opened their eyes to the questionable suitability of a player who could hardly keep up with the pace of the Premier League.’
It’s to be noted Vargas has regularly struggled with injuries. He was sidelined for 144 days last year.
