Towards the back end of last season, there were a few rumours suggesting that Aston Villa wanted to bring back Tammy Abraham to the club.
He had already done well with the Villans during a loan spell from Chelsea before heading to AS Roma, where he enjoyed himself greatly in his first season in Italy.
However, disaster struck right at the end of the season, as the striker tore the ligaments in his knee, which, according to Corriere dello Sport, scuppered a big transfer to Aston Villa last summer.
This is what the newspaper suggest on Tuesday when looking at some of the moves AS Roma might make in the coming months, as they say Abraham ‘would have already ended up’ at Villa Park if it were not for his injury.
This backs up a report from June when journalist Ilario Di Giovambattista claimed the transfer had already been closed for €30m, but was scuppered when the player suffered his setback.
The 26-year-old has now recovered from his injury and was on the bench for the first time this season in the 1-0 win over Sassuolo, hinting that a return to the pitch in some shape or form is around the corner.
It’s explained that Abraham ‘will have to recover his full physical efficiency’ for the Serie A side to go with him as their frontman going forward, which sounds a lot like he could be available at a cut price in the summer if he isn’t able to fully convince.
Whether that’s a gamble Aston Villa would be willing to take remains to be seen, but it’s something Unai Emery and Monchi might want to keep an eye on if they are willing to be patient with him.
